Anyone can enter a state of hypnosis. However, the ease with which this occurs varies greatly from person to person.
How many times have you been on your way home from work or a meeting, only to pull into your driveway without remembering passing any street signs? No recollection of turning onto your road or taking any turns at all. Yet, you still arrived safely. Believe it or not, that was your mind entering a hypnotic state!
In reality, no one outside of yourself can make you enter a hypnotic state. Only a professional hypnotist can guide or facilitate the process. Without your conscious consent and cooperation with the hypnotist’s instructions, you will not enter hypnosis. Additionally, you cannot be forced to do anything against your will while in a hypnotic state.
Hypnotic states should not be confused with or considered the same as sleep. Although the phrase “deep sleep” is sometimes used to describe the experience, it is important to understand that you will never actually lose consciousness during hypnosis. Rather, you enter into a profoundly relaxed and focused state of awareness, which is quite different from the unconscious state associated with sleep.
